The Story of David and Goliath: A Story of Courage for Kids

Have you ever felt like something was just too big and too scary to face? Maybe it was the first day at a new school, or a really hard test, or a problem that felt way too enormous for one small person to handle. Well, get ready, because today we are going to hear about a boy named David who faced the biggest, scariest giant you can imagine. And guess what? He wasn't afraid, because he knew God was with him!

Who Was David?

David was a young shepherd boy. He spent his days out in the fields, watching over fluffy sheep, making sure they were safe. He didn't live in a palace. He didn't have a fancy sword or shiny armour. He was just a boy: a boy who loved God with his whole heart. In fact, the Bible tells us that God Himself chose David because of what was inside his heart.

"The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart." — 1 Samuel 16:7

That means God doesn't care if you're the tallest or the strongest or the most popular. He looks at your heart, whether you love Him and trust Him. That's what matters most!

The Giant Named Goliath

Now, Israel (the people of God) had a big problem. Their enemies, a group called the Philistines, had a secret weapon. His name was Goliath. Can you imagine meeting someone who was over nine feet tall? That's taller than most doorways in your house, stacked twice! Goliath wore heavy armor and carried a huge spear. Every single day, he walked out and shouted at the Israelite army, daring someone to come and fight him. And every single day… nobody moved. The whole army was terrified.

"A champion named Goliath...came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span." — 1 Samuel 17:4

Six cubits and a span: that is a really, really tall person! Think of the biggest, most scary thing you've ever seen, and imagine it was shouting your name every morning. That's what the Israelite soldiers were facing every single day.

David Steps Up

One day, David's dad sent him to bring food to his brothers who were soldiers in the army. When David arrived and heard Goliath shouting, he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Why was everyone so scared? Didn't they know that God was on their side? David said he would fight the giant! King Saul tried to talk him out of it. "You're just a boy!" he said. But David had faced scary things before. Out in the fields, he had fought off a lion and a bear to protect his sheep. And each time, God had helped him. He knew God would help him again.

"The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine." — 1 Samuel 17:37

David remembered the times God had helped him before, and that gave him the courage to be brave again. We can do that too; when we remember the ways God has helped us, it helps us trust Him the next time something feels scary!

Five Smooth Stones and a Sling

King Saul offered David his big heavy armor to wear, but it was way too big! So David went to a nearby stream and picked up five smooth, round stones. Just five small stones. Then he walked toward Goliath with only his sling, a simple tool shepherds used. When Goliath saw David, he laughed. But David called back bravely: "I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty!"

"You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty." — 1 Samuel 17:45

David wasn't fighting alone. He was fighting with God by his side. And that is the most powerful thing in the whole world!

The Giant Falls!

David reached into his bag, took out one stone, and placed it in his sling. He swung it around… and let it go! The stone flew through the air and hit Goliath right in the forehead. The giant, who had terrified an entire army, fell to the ground with a crash. The Israelites cheered! The battle was won, not with a sword or a shield, but with one small stone and one big faith in God. Can you imagine watching that happen? One brave boy. One little stone. One mighty God.

"So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine." — 1 Samuel 17:50

God doesn't need us to be the biggest or the strongest. He just needs us to be willing and to trust Him. With God, even the smallest person can do something amazing!

Fun Facts About David and Goliath

• Goliath was estimated to be over 9 feet tall, much, much taller than any basketball player today!

• David picked up FIVE stones, but only needed one! Some people think the extras were for Goliath's brothers, just in case.

• A sling was a real weapon! Skilled slingers could launch stones incredibly fast, like a bullet flying through the air.

• David later became one of the greatest kings of Israel, and he was chosen by God while he was still just a shepherd boy watching sheep!

• David also wrote many of the Psalms: the beautiful songs and poems in the Bible. He loved to sing and praise God, even before he was famous!

What Can We Learn from David and Goliath?

• Be Brave: Courage doesn't mean you're not scared; it means you trust God even when you are scared.

• Size Doesn't Matter to God: God doesn't choose the biggest or the strongest. He looks at your heart and your faith.

• Remember God's Help: When you feel afraid, think of a time God helped you before. That memory can give you strength to trust Him again.

• Fight with Faith: David's real power came from trusting in God, not from his size or his weapons. Our greatest strength always comes from God!

• You Are Never Alone: Just like David wasn't alone when he faced Goliath, you are never alone either. God is always with you!
